1967 was not only a summer of love but the summer of Loving v. Virginia. The landmark civil rights case was just one part of the civil rights story of summer of 1967; a summer which saw Thurgood Marshall named as the first African American Justice to the Supreme Court, some of the most violent and unprecedented race rioting in our nation’s history, and Muhammad Ali convicted by a federal court for refusing to be drafted. Beyond the freewheeling summer of love, the meaning of counter-culture ran deep in the summer of 1967.
