Please join the Ethnography and Oral History Initiative at Yale for a workshop with artist
Tracie Pouliot about the Chair City Oral History Book Series and Community Art Center in
Gardner, Massachusetts. Gardner has an identity as “chair city” but almost all of its furniture
factories have closed. Through the Chair City Oral History Book Series, Pouliot works with
people who made their living in the furniture industry to create handcrafted books that honor
the history of Gardner and provide a tool for community members impacted by
deindustrialization to rebuild their community. The Community Art Center houses the
production of the books and provides a space where people can rebuild the social networks
that were lost when factories closed.
Tracie Pouliot is a community artist, printmaker, portrait artist, and creator of participatory
exhibits. She received a Bachelor of Fine Art from Pratt Institute and a Master of Art in
Community Art from Maryland Institute College of Art.
